World Environment Day 2021

World Environment Day 2021

Quayclean Australia paid tribute to its venue customers across Australia on World Environment Day who have adopted important changes to help renew and nourish ecosystems.

The world loses enough forest every three seconds to cover a football pitch and, over the last century, half of our wetlands have been destroyed.

With World Environment Day’s 2021 theme being Reimagine, Recreate and Restore, highlighting the need for ecosystem restoration throughout the world, Quayclean and its customers had identified a number of areas that support this year’s theme:

  • Successfully manage clients’ waste and ensuring high landfill diversion rates
  • Develop composting options for food waste, including implementing large-scale worm farms
  • Implement strategies for waste reduction including initiatives to reduce waste arriving on sites
  • Reduce the usage of single use plastics including the implementation of reusable coffee cups and drink bottles for the Quayclean team
  • Participate in Clean Up Australia day

Quayclean’s environmental highlights include:

  • Collecting and recycling 98 tonnes of glass bottles and cans at Australian Turf Club venues between August 2020 and April 2021 for the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)
  • Collecting and composting (onsite worm farms) 1000 kgs of food waste at Venues Canberra between March and May this year, plus collecting 92,000 containers via the CDS from September 2020 to May 2021
  • Collecting, crushing and recycling 8900 kgs of glass during an eight-month period at Marvel Stadium – the CO2 equivalent of 18,702 kms driven in a family car
  • Collecting and recycling 1800 kgs of e-waste at Marvel Stadium in April plus introducing two electric buggies

Worm farms are a great asset when it comes to repurposing food waste. Our team onsite at Venues Canberra, ACT.

Quayclean Chief Executive, Mark Piwkowski, said he was proud of the results the business had achieved.

“As a business, we place a key focus on working with our customers in developing environmental solutions. Not only are these solutions great for our planet, but they produce positive financial results for our customers,” said Mr Piwkowski.

“Obviously the COVID pandemic has impacted the number of patrons who have attended our venues over the past 15 months. However, we are pleased with the uptake from customers together with some of the outstanding environmental results that we have been able to achieve in partnership with them,” he added.

Piwkowski urged all Australians to adopt measures to improve the ecosystem.

“As recommended by the United Nations for the 2021 World Environment Day, there are simple measures we can each take such as embracing a plant-rich diet, starting an urban garden, planting a tree, reducing the consumption of single-use products and fighting food waste,” he said.

“We only have one planet, so it is our collective duty to protect our environment for current and future generations,” he added.
