Australian Turf Club looks to enhance sustainability of racecourse facilities with QuayClean Partnership

The Australian Turf Club has prioritised recycling and sustainable racecourse facilities at all five venues following a landmark five-year agreement with Quayclean Australia.

Quayclean will be responsible for on-site recycling and waste management, cleaning, event day presentation services and hygiene control at Royal Randwick, Rosehill Gardens, Canterbury Park and Warwick Farm racecourses, plus Rosehill Bowling Club.

Quayclean CEO, Mark Piwkowski, said the company’s diverse range of skills and its vast experience in the horseracing, major sport and events industries makes it the best fit organisation for the ATC.

“Over 300 casual and permanent staff will be employed to support functions and raceday activity across facilities. All staff will be employed and paid under the 2010 Modern Cleaning Award which is the only award available for this service” said Piwkowski.

“Along with ATC partners we will set new benchmarks for environmental standards in waste, energy and water management by adopting the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle,” he added.

“We will work with the ATC’s waste services provider to deliver a 70% recycling target within the first 12 months, and over 85% within two years. Further, it is our ambition to develop a plan to reduce waste generated and eventually move towards carbon neutral facilities.”

ATC CEO, Jamie Barkley, said Quayclean will work closely with the ATC’s stakeholders and partners to deliver environmental targets and deliver waste management cost savings.

“Quayclean will deliver and implement a stakeholder recycling plan for property, catering, grounds and food related activities. This plan will focus on stakeholder education, engagement and reporting,” said Mr Barkley.

“There will be a heavy emphasis on eliminating contamination with a particular focus on organic matter, and we want to have a 100% elimination of non-cyclable materials such as single use plastics,” he said.

Quayclean is also contracted to the Melbourne Racing Club’s venues at Caulfield, Mornington and Ladbrokes Park, Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, and Ascot and Belmont Park racecourses in Perth.
